The 'Village Shop Support' service provides expert and financial support to village shops and Post offices to help retain and enhance the vital services they offer.

Leicestershire County Council launched its new Village Shop Support service in November 2011.

The service is focussed on ensuring that Village Shops and Post Offices can receive expert retail advice to help improve their profitability so as to retain these vital services within our rural communities.

In 2012-13 alone the service (provided by Kerching Retail) has supported over 120 businesses, made over 40 face to face consultation visits and awarded over £9000 in grants.

Other highlights from the 2012-13 programme include:

  • Launching a voucher scheme for free advice and support and to advertise the Village Shop Support grant. This proved very successful in attracting calls and greatly increased the exposure and take up of the programme.
  • Towards the end of the year 9 businesses were signed up on the 'The Village Shop 5 Point Plan' with a goal to grow the businesses by 10% over the next 12 months.
  • BBC East Midlands News, BBC Radio Leics, Hinckley Times & Melton Times have all ran features on the Village Shop Support scheme.
